Maybe Bloomberg Should Nanny His Own

Maybe Bloomberg Should Nanny His Own

New York mayor and billionaire bully Michael Bloomberg was celebrating the 10th anniversary of his original nanny-state gambit, banning smoking in Gotham bars and restaurants, when news came that another of his fellow Mayors Against Illegal Guns had run afoul of the law.

Gainesville, Fla., mayor Craig Lowe was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and property damage after police found him asleep in his car at the scene of a crash. Lowe was one of 30 mayors featured in a recent MAIG ad.

Lowe is hardly the only MAIG member to make the crime report. Marcus Hook, Pa., Mayor James Schiliro (R.) arranged for a police cruiser to pick up a 20-year-old man and bring him to the mayor's home. Schiliro then was alleged to have served the minor alcohol and demanded sexual favors. When those weren't forthcoming, Schiliro told the man he was a hostage and discharged a pistol inside the house.

The MAIG honor roll also has included former Hartford, Conn., mayor Eddie Perez, convicted of five felony corruption charges and sentenced to three years in prison, former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, convicted of racketeering, fraud and extortion, among other charges, and Racine, Wis., mayor Gary Becker, charged with trying to meet a 14-year-old girl he'd chatted up online.

There's a very good reason that corrupt urban politicians like corrupt dictators anywhere, don't want people to have guns. Guns are the ultimate check on their kind, and they don't like that. Bloomberg has enough money not to need to be a crook, and so far, we don't know anything about his being a pervert, but he might want to conduct a few universal background checks of his own. On his fellow mayors.
